Rijeka's Transport Route - A Factor of Introduction Croatia into European Transport and Economic Integrations

Geographic position, as a crucial spatial category, defines in any case importance of position of Croatia within European economic, legal, political and transport system. Croatian area, situated between Mediterranean, Pannonian and Dinaric European area, has become part of two important transeuropean routes - longitudinal route connects Baltic and Adriatic seas. "Rijeka's transport route", with the most advanced transport junction of Rijeka, has been developing in such a transport environment. Rijeka's transport junction, as the final point in the above mentioned corridors, represents the strategic point of the whole capital Croatian transport infrastructure. Purpose and intention of this article is to study and present, from a macroeconomic view, the importance of Rijeka s transport route for Croatian integration into European transport route, as well as to give one clear picture of transport infrastructure and transport that is initiator and generator of an accelerated development. However, the article must simultaneously point out the fact that transport and its infrastructure refine and enrich the environment, while causing at the same time many environmental harmful effects.
