The impact of Changes in the Croatian Borders on Traffic between towns (1500-1820)

The Croatian border has been significantly changed several times. Ottoman conquest as well as the establishment of Venetian, Habsburg or French authority over parts of Croatian national territory had a strong impact on the communications between towns and their urban development. New borders established after numerous Venetian-Ottoman, Habsburg-Ottoman or Habsburg-French wars which took part mainly on Croatian territory, each time dramatically changing the shape and area of Croatian national territory. The repeated shift of Croatian borders and reshaping of national territory during the early modern era resulted in significant changes in the direction and frequency of existing connections or with the construction of completely new routes of connections. Changes in the traffic network caused the modification of sanitary cordons along the Ottoman border that resulted with the reshaping of market systems, the conditions of regional and urban development as well as changes in the hierarchy between towns. Roads as crucial arteries of a space have always had a crucial role in human life. Roads are not only the routes of the transport of people and goods. The movement of armies, control and integration of conquered areas have always depended on roads, the spread of cultural influences and the transfer of information. Traffic connection is also a crucial precondition of any regional development even today.
