Group Therapy of Acute and Chronic Trauma Related Disorders Similarities and Differences
Acute and chornic trauma related disorders differ in the significance of the traumatic experience, coping resources, and social suport for the forming of clinical picture, but in the after-war influence of the disorder on the personality and cocial enviromment as well. In both cases the traumatised person looses the feeling of basic security, changes the system of values and relations to the others. All these have consequence on the therapeutic process. The basis of our therapeutic program from the beginning of our work with the psychotrumatized veterans and displaced persons was the group psychotherapy. Through the work with 25 groups during 6 years (time limited groups, 40 sessions), we could see the differences in the grouup dynamics in the groups of relatively acute disorders and long lasting sequales of the trauma. We have tried to describe them by the differrences in cohesion, characteristics of interpersonal relations, transference and countertransference and defences and resistnce.
