Corrosion influence on fatigue strength of AlMg4.5Mn welded joints in bending
Optimal design of aluminum alloy welded structures, such as various ships, wessels, planes, cars etc., makes it necessary to know the dynamic behavior of the components under cyclic loads and other influences (corrosion, temperature, etc.). The most frequently used aluminum alloys for maritime structures are 5086 and 5083 (according ASTM, i.e. AlMg4 and AlMg4.5Mn according ISO, DIN and HRN) because of their good corrosion resistance. With the course of time, however, these alloys suffer damage due to corrosion as well. The analysis of the corrosion influence and corresponding damage on the fatigue strength of AlMg4.5Mn aluminum welded joints are presented here. The test were carried out in two sets, depending on the state of corrosion of the specimens, i.e. those with and without corrosion. A comparison of respective fatigue lives was used to determine the influence of corrosion on the fatigue strength of welded aluminum joints.
