The Development of Strategic Readers

In this paper you may find out what is actually covered by the term strategic reading and how the strategy-oriented teacher is supposed to teach reading. Besides, there is a sample reading passage, comprehension questions, and a questionnaire which may be applied for your own classroom research on the reading perception and reading behaviour of the young learners you teach. It should be noted that our special focus in this paper is one of the possible suggestions aimed at making young readers aware of what reading really is and how it is to be best learnt. It seems especially important to note that the suggested procedure can be both applied in the teaching of first and second language reading. As for the strategy-oriented teacher in these L1/L2 reading contexts, one of the distinctive features is his or her ability to encourage pupils onto a productive interaction with the text in accordance with the cognitive, social and cultural needs of the readers themselves. Being constantly encouraged to behave strategically, students will be given an opportunity to become autonomous learners, able to obtain better long-term results.
