Light weight design through aluminium alloy welded structures
Trends in transport means development (passenger cars and commercial vehicles, trains, ships) in recent time are influenced by opposing requirements-on one side, a high efficiency and performance with low impact on environment (energy consumption, recycling capability), and on the other side an improved reliability and safety - should be realized. These achievements should be accompanied by low production and maintenance (service) costs. To satisfy these requirements a light - weight design is of paramount importance. These is the reason why the aluminium alloy welded structures are increasingly used. Material used due to the requirements for a good manufacturing capability, high fatigue strength and corrosion resistance was AlMg4.5Mn with sheet thickness from 1 to 4 mm. Joining technique being used was MIG and MAG - welding. Environmental conditions were taken into account by investigations on pre-corroded specimens which were conditioned for 1000 h in 5% NaCl solution under mechanical loading and alternating hot/cold damp climate including salt spray.
