Vascularisation of benign and malignant thyroid nodules: CD US evaluation

Frequency encoded Doppler US has allowed identification of flow in thyroid tumors, but its role in evaluation for malignancy has not been acurately defined. DUS and spectral parameters were analyzed in 50 benign and 20 malignant thyroid nodules. Five vascularity patterns were identified. Significantly more benign nodules had patterns 1, 2 and 3, shile significantly more malignant nodules had vascularisation patterns 3 and 4 and only pattern 4. Internal flow without or with minimal peripheral flow on DUS, and RI>0.70 can be used to distinugish beteween malignant and bening nodules fairly reliably.
