Characterisation of radiophotoluminescent dosimeters for environmental monitoring

Solid state dosimetry systems for environmental monitoring, included the early radiophotoluminescent (RPL) glass dosimeters, were investigated in detail according an European Laboratory Test Programme (Piesch and Burgkhardt, 1983). That RPL glass dosimetry system was also involved in the international intercomparison of solid state dosimeters for environmental monitoring (Ranogajec-Komor at al., 1996). RPL systems are under permanent development. They are successfully used for several years in large scale personal monitoring, and in clinical dosimetry in Japan (Chiyoda, 2007). Recently, RPL system for personal monitoring is introduced also in France which will cause a significant change in the European personal dosimetry profile (van Dyck at al., 2000). The aim of this work was to determine the dosimetric characteristics of the SC-1 flat RPL glass dosimeters with FGD-202 reader mostly according to the new IEC Standard (IEC, 2006) with respect to environmental dosimetry. The Standard contains the requirements for performance tests and dosimetry characteristics of thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) systems for personal and environmental monitoring. Nowadays there are several other solid state dosimetry methods used in routine monitoring. Therefore the applicability of this Standard for other solid state passive dosimetry systems, in our case for RPL, can be useful.
