The Ragusan Republic and Western Europe: the Sea as a Medium of Language Contact
Linguistic contacts between the Ragusan Republic and Western Europe are reflected in the use of loanwords, syntactic constructions and code-switching. The Italian influence was by far the most prominent, both regarding the number and frequency of loanwords: between 88% and 95% of all lexical items were of Italian origin which indicates the clear dominance of close over distant borrowing in the periods under consideration.
