Toward the protection of psoriasis patients' rights
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting 2-3% of world population. In Croatia, almost 100 000 people has psoriasis thus making psoriasis an important public health problem. Therefore, psoriasis is not only burden for the patients but also for their families and the whole society. Although, this chronic disease is usually not life threatening, it significantly reduces patient's quality of life in general. Therefore, raising awareness and combating ignorance about psoriasis not being a contagious disease should be the basic approach in public health actions. Recent efforts in Croatia tend to combat discrimination and social exclusion for psoriasis patients because of appearance of their skin. Activities should be concentrated in time professional orientation and equal employment opportunities to people not suffering from psoriasis. Public awareness should be based on current, balanced and accurate information. Psychological support must be an integral part in therapy of patients with psoriasis thus providing the patients with strength in social contacts with family members, friends and employers. Formal legal rights should better protect and improve the lives of patients. Ending inequality based on different appearance of skin of patients with psoriasis is the final goal we would like to achieve through the legal actions.
