Limestones of the lower part of the Upper Jurassic with Salpingoporella sellii
Upper Jurassic deposits at this locality are characterized by bioclastic wackestones (biomicrites) with small fossil fragments, individual benthic foraminifera and scattered remnants of algal thalluses. Salpingoporella sellii (CRESCENTI) is more frequent. Heteroporella anici (SOKAČ & NIKLER) is very rare, but present, along with the aforementioned species. The occurrence of these species in the Velebit area is important for determination of the Oxfordian– Kimmeridgian age (lower part of the Upper Jurassic), which is the presumed age of this locality. Sedimentological characteristics and the (although rare) fossil content indicate a protected shallow shoal – lagoonal depositional environment.
