Upper Jurassic algae from Ravna Vlaška, Mt. Biokovo
In the lower part of the Upper Jurassic succession one can see a multiple occurrence of sedimentary discontinuities caused by local emersions which took place during the Oxfordian and the Kimmeridgian. In the interval between these emersions, micritic limestones contain Heteroporella anici (SOKAČ & NIKLER), Salpingoporella annulata CAROZZI, rare Salpingoporella sellii (CRESCENTI), and the first occurrence at this locality of Clypeina jurassica FAVRE. In the biomicrite beds above the second emersion level, there is a significant increase in the number of Clypeina fragments and cross-sections, but without the other aforementioned species. Only S. annulata reappears again in the higher parts of the Upper Jurassic. Stratigraphically, the strata between the two emersion levels containing the algas are Kimmeridgian in age, and the first appearance of Clypeina above the second emersion level indicates the Lower Tithonian.
