The Badenian deposits of Bizek quarry
The abandoned Bizek quarry is located on the SW part of Medvednica, at the edge of the village of Bizek in the western suburbs of Zagreb. In the past, dimension stone called ‘ Litavac’ was quarried here. The majority of deposits in Bizek quarry are made up of bioclastic limestone which sporadically pass into conglomerate. Basal parts of the Badenian are composed of dolomite breccia. In the upper part of the breccia, the content of biogenic detritus is increased, and dominated by fragments of coralline algae, bryozoans and oysters. The limestone is determined as biocalcarenite and lithic biocalcarenite, depending on the composition. Fossil detritus is mainly composed of coralline algae and mollusc fragments, and subordinately of echinodermata, bryozoa, and benthic foraminifera. In the origin of these deposits, intrabasin factors played a very important role, including huge organic production and high energy water regime (waves and currents).
