The Role of Chronic Exposure to Gasoline and Diesel on Cell Mediated Immunity of People Situated Near Gasoline Industry
Urban air pollutants, particularly benzene, toluene, etilbenzene, xilene (BTX-e) and diesel exhaust particles are known to contribute to the increased prevalence of many allergic and environmental diseases and multiple chemical sensitivity or other related syndromes, as a result of an abnormal immune response based on environmental damage of lymphocyte subsets. The aim of this study was to examine the alteration of cell mediate immunity and the role of cytolytic molecule perforin in different lymphocyte subpopulation in peripheral blood of subjects situated near gasoline industry, compared with healthy donors. The results demonstrated that 17% of PBL in all examine group are perforin positive (total perforin is significantly lower in exposure than in control group). Percentages of double positive cells also showed significant decrease in all examine lymphocyte subpopulations compared to controls.
