The polysemy of stand
One of the central premises of the cognitive linguistics framework is that we organize our knowledge and experience of the world by making use of such cognitive tools as image schemata - abstract representations of perceptual experience which enable the mapping of spatial onto conceptual structure. Since standing is canonical position for humans it is only natural to expect a rich set of extensions from the specific, postural use of the verb stand. This paper relies on the image schema theory in providing a cognitive explanation for numerous locational, metaphorical and idiomatic uses of the English stand.
