Mozart therapy and children with ASD

Children with ASD, apart from other numerous difficulties exhibit in the auditory perception as well. There has been proved that the music therapy (Hearing Integration Training) due to its frequency, loudness, space and time variations alerts their attention. The purpose of this paper was to present the application of hearing training based on 8 audio CDs for Mozart sound therapy, 4 audio CDs with illustrations in the picture book and 36 scent boxes. Participants in this study were 12 primary school age children from the Center for autism, Zagreb. Seven children were in the partial day treatment and 5 in the whole day treatment. There were 4 girls and 8 boys, 8 were of younger primary school age, while 4 were of older primary school age. All the children were also included in the Program for stimulating sensory integration which concerns auditory and oral - olfactory area as well. The Questionnaire for assessing child’ s abilities (Heđever, 2004.) was applied at the beginning and at the end of the therapy in order to assess and evaluate effects of the music therapy. The assessment list for oral – olfactory area particularly designed for the purpose of this study was also applied. Obtained results show certain positive changes in the recognition of sounds and smells, which positively influences the functioning level of participating children such as prolonged attention span, emotional satisfaction and raised tolerance level on unpleasant or unexpected sounds and smells. Apart form those effects, music therapy can be used for relaxation during the every day work.
