Drainage discharge and nitrogen leaching in different detailed drainage systems
In the past period of intensive agriculture, pipe drainage was applied in many countries to drain excess water. This was particularly the case of countries that invested highly into agricultural development and which had hydromorphic soils in their teritory. It was, however, just at the time of intensive agricultural that soil and water pollution occurred. Opinion was formed that drainage systems, especially pipe drainage, increased nitrogen leaching and that intensive water and generally envinormental pollution occurred in the conditions of draineg soils. This was reason why we set up a pipe drainage trial on hydromorphic soil in the agroecological conditions of the Lonja Field (Lonjsko polje). This paper presents the five-year results of water discharge and nitrogen leaching from drained soil.
