Vocabulary teaching methods and the role of L1

This diploma paper gives an overview of vocabulary teaching methods from their beginnings to the present. Special emphasis is put on the methods used for teaching young beginners and the amount of L1 allowed in the process. The two English lessons recorded in a primary school in a small town in Croatia were analyzed in terms of the vocabulary teaching methods used and how much the L1 was used during the lessons. The way the learners responded to the methods and their effectiveness were analyzed.
