Dental Caries in Children with Insulin - Dependent Diabetes Mellitus - An Epidemiological Study
While the periodontium is exposed to degenerative processes regardless of the disease status the caries is extremely dependent on the metabolic regulation of the diabetes mellitus type I. The aim of this study was analyze dental status of children with well metbolically regulated diabetes mellitus type I related to simillar healthy population. 160 children aged between 6 and 16 were examined. They were divided into two equal groups. The first group of patients suffered from DM type I while the second was control group. Slightly higher risk of dental caries was recorded in diseased children probably due to the sistemic influence of DM type I. Optimal metabolic regulation of disease reduced the risk of decay altrogh the certain risk was still present. Better dental treatment in deseased children can be explained through discipline and altered lifestyle of such patients.
