Phraseological Blends
Blending as a general cognitive operation is a model proposed by Fauconnier and Turner (1998, 2002) and Coulson (2000) in order to account for both linguistic and non-linguistic facts. In this paper we explore the cognitive mechanisms at work in coining phraseological blends, i.e. amalgamations of at least two different phraseological units in one modification. Blends in phraseology occur as clever linguistic manipulations on the structural level, but the underlying cognitive design that makes blends possible is far more complex. It involves sets of conceptual mappings and complex conceptual integration network relations.
