The Functional View of Religion: Limits and Dangers
The humanities and social sciences are part of the theoretical apparatus that serves for the enlightenment of Western societies. Sociology, in particular, has become a hermeneutic authority, whose concepts and images concerning human existence and the world govern our understanding of the external and internal factors of human life. A functionally enlarged notion of religion, which excludes the question of truth and declares everything socially identifiable by its subjective sense to be religion, is not able to avoid the question of how to tell sense from nonsense. In a proces of critical self-reflection, it is time to rethink the pattern of understanding offered by the functional view of religion, which superficially appears so easy to be handled within the theological field with respect to its limits and dangers.
