The emergence of early L3 lexicon: the first month
The paper examines the L3 lexical development of a bilingual pair of siblings acquiring Hungarian as a third language. The English dominant English-Persian bilingual children started the acquisition of Hungarian as a third language at ages two and three. Video and audio records were taken weekly about their language development. This paper puts a special emphasis on the analysis of the lexical development, i.e. the building of L3 mental lexicon. We will examine what words are acquired, what word classes are represented in the one-word utterance stage. The emergence of Hungarian words in the English cotext and that of English words in Hungarin cotext as well as Persian words in the other two languages' contexts will be shown. The paper sheds light on some fashons of lecixal acquisition which presumably determine the storage (compound and/or coordinate) of the words, and thus the structure of the multilingual mental lexicon. Since English Persian and Hungarian are typologically different languages, the study may contribute to the debate as to whether the mental lexicon is language independent or language specific.
