This paper looks at the prepositional and infinitival uses of to. Its function as an allative marker is posited as the basic sense, which gives rise to an extensive array of uses. This distribution of senses is not random: all prepositional usages extend metaphorically and/or metonymically from to’s spatial use; also infinitival to ultimately derives from dative-allative to through to’s purpose meaning and the process of grammaticalization.
