What is homogenization?

Homogenization means different things to different people, but as it started with an Italian school around Sergio {;\sc Spagnolo}; in the late 1960s, and a French school around Fran\c{;c};ois {;\sc Murat}; and myself in the early 1970s, I want to describe a few questions which occur naturally in our context, where there is no assumption of periodicity, although the name itself was first used by Ivo {;\sc Babu\v ska}; who had borrowed it from nuclear engineering, and he used periodicity assumptions, in a different way than \'Evariste {;\sc Sanchez-Palencia}; had done before him. We had also used no probabilities, as probabilities should be avoided as much as possible if one wants scientific knowledge to advance.
