Enlarged CEFTA: Economic Impacts on Southeast European Countries
This paper points out differences between the current approach of realizing a free trade zone in Southeast Europe, based on a network of bilateral trade arrangements, and the new approach that is based on a single regional trade agreement. Relying on theoretical and empirical findings of the static and dynamic effects of comparable economic integrations, and bearing in mind the achieved level of development and convergence of those countries, we can estimate that the establishment of a free trade zone in Southeast Europe will result in relatively small static benefits of trade creation while the long-term benefits could be significantly greater.
