Post-traumatic stress disorder in Croatian war veterans: Prevalence and psycho-social characteristics.

The paper examines the incidence of PTSD in the sample of 3217 Croatian war veterans, and the influence of various features of the veterans' pre-war, wartime and post-war status respectively on the onset of the disorder. Based on the results of two separate instruments (Mississippi Combat Scale and Watson PTSD Interview) 25% of the veterans were rated as having partial PTSD and 16,22% as having complete PTSD syndrome. PTSD was explained primarily by war stressors, although pre-war and post-war factors (such as stability of the family, social life, family relationships, drug and alcohol abuse) also contributed to the likelihood of the current PTSD diagnosis. In the second part of the study the subjects were the veterans with the comparable number of war stressors experienced, who were classified into three groups: no-PTSD group, partial PTSD group and complete PTSD group. The differences in the pre-war, wartime and post-war status were examined through discriminative analysis, which revealed the pre-war conative status and social functioning having a prominent role in the onset of PTSD, and acute as well as chronic health problems in the population in both war and post-war period.
