The role of crystal field excitations in YbInCu4
The Y-doping suppresses the valence transition in YbInCu4 preserving the magnetic properties of the high-temperature local-moment (LM) phase essentially unchanged down to the lowest temperatuires[1]. We report the specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and transport data of the LM phase of Yb0.5Y0.5InCu4 in the temperature range between 2 K and 300 K, and magnetic fields of 0 and 5 T. We found this sample to be the most convenient for study the properties of the LM phase at low temperatures. The obtained data can be well explained within the local-moment crystal field theory for the two close-lying Yb 4f ground state Γ 6 and Γ 7 doublets, and Γ 8 excited-state quartet, and with a very weak or absent Kondo interaction. The crystal field scheme and the Kondo scale proposed by this work, which differ from the ones commonly accepted in literature, can help in better understanding of the interactions that are responsible for the onset of the valence transition and also to elucidate the low-temperature phenomena observed in the LM phase of YbInCu4[2].
