Students’ Digital Library
[the problem] With the start of each year students face the same problem, the acquiring of indispensable scientific and exam literature for their study. Despite being well equipped the university libraries are often not able to supply enough copies of certain publications. Even if they have more than couple of copies, the lack of necessary time for materials to circulate through the hands of all the students is a huge problem. [the survey] In order to gather the data on students' actual needs, library and information science students have been surveyed. With the survey we tried not only to analyze needs but also the means and strategies of obtaining "hard-to-find" materials. These are some of the areas questioned within the survey: • Students’ habits and tendencies during literature search • Which are the places and sources they find the necessary literature • How long do they have to wait on materials • Which are the common problems during the quest The collected results have given us an insight in LIS students’ habits and problems during the search for literature. [the resolution] Building a digital library is on possible solution and LIS students should be well equipped with the knowledge for this task. Simultaneously it provides an opportunity for LIS students to apply their knowledge and put theory in to practice while improving upon conventional methods of information referencing. Department of Information Sciences on Faculty of Philosophy in Osijek developed a web based online system with which such a collection can be created. This is only the first step of the process. Other issues that had to be solved were ; the selection of materials for the collection, ensuring the copyright, and organising the process of digitisation with a goal to provide more efficient search and retrieval. To ensure the collection's feasibility and growth in the future the Department agreed to allow students to work on the collection as a part of their obligatory practical classes. The whole work is being organized by Information Sciences Student Club under guidance of subject professors.
