Sustainable building and its reflections on Croatia

The effects of climate change on our planet and the recognition of potential dangers of its even stronger impacts on our lives prompted the international public to implement the sustainable measures. Numerous conventions and protocols, some of them dating back to 1990, encourage the application of measures which will reduce the emission of harmful gases and the implementation of the agreements. In the area which includes the energy saving in buildings and the environment protection European Union passed a number of Directives which regulate the legal framework. Energy efficient building plans and designs represent the building standard in Europe. In Croatia the legal framework in the area of energy efficiency in buildings follows all European activities and, with certain time delay regarding the EU trends, changes the outdated regulatory rules as well as implements new principles in building which enable the energy saving. Already pending are the activities regarding the application of the Directive 2002/91/EC on the energy performance of buildings. The implementation of this Directive will boost the regulation of the areas of planning and design, construction and usage of buildings and develop the technology as well as the usage of materials, renewable energy sources, technical systems and their control.
