The stiffness of pavements and subgrades at small strains - geotechnical aspects
The paper presents the geotechnical aspects in testing of pavements and subgrades by Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves Method (SASW). For the internationally significant highway road system which is being developed in the Republic of Croatia, one of the most important sections is the highway E70, spanning Bregana - Zagreb - Lipovac (from the Slovenian border to the border with Serbia and Montenegro). Geotechnical research was performed for the not yet constructed portions, Bregana - Jankomir (L=13.7 km) and Županja - Lipovac (L=32.5 km). The research work included the testing of existing pavements and subgrades by the SASW procedure, performed at 100 m intervals. That makes for 462 testing locations. Such a large number of testing locations enabled the testing of all parameters that play a part in the SASW method, and it also provided great practical experiences in the application of this procedure.
