Destination Management and Collaborative Planning
Today, tourism destination development is heading towards positions of mutually beneficial partnerships and balanced tourism development. In other words, a lot of understanding, research and cooperative efforts will be needed in shaping and sustaining initiatives required for the tourism of a competitive tourism destination. Hence, destination management must be viewed as tourism activities that mobilise local interests within the framework of purposeful collaboration with tourism-supply providers in order to create a destination product. Although collaborative decision processes provide a number of advantages, they are not suited to every situation. Namely, in the case of emergency or if certain elements, vital to collaborative planning, are missing, centralised decision-making, regardless at which level, might be the best way to ensure that tourism will be sustainable. Nevertheless, the task of destination management should be to revert to partnerships and to coordinate between tourism-supply providers, the authorities and residents.
