Lenticulostriatal vasculopathy in infants with intracranial CMV infections - diagnosis and follow up with transfontanellar color duplex doppler
Intracranial infections, especially with cytomegalovirus are important causes of morbidity and mortality in neonates and infants. Conventional brain US shows abnormal echogenicity of parenchyma, echogenic sulci and gyri, ventriculat dilatation and sequelae like ventriculitis, abscessus, hydrocephalus and calcifications. Recently, transfontanellar color doppler imaging revealed flow within the echogenicities in the thalamostriatal vessels during first few months of life, as a sign of the first stage of infection. We present infants with confirmed CMV infection and ultrasonographic findings of hyperechogenicities in the region of BG.
