Testing and comparioson of models for calculaton of the soil cation exchange capacity

The aim of this paper was to improve soil analysis report interpretations by determining the best model or by creating the better one for calculation of the soil cation exchange capacity (CEC). Since CEC is a useful indicator of soil fertility because indicate its capacity to hold cation nutrients, it could be quite useful to be able to calculate CEC using ordinary soil fertility control data without measuring CEC in labs. In order to compare models for calculating CEC, the soil samples were sampled from more than 200 lowland sites in Croatia. Since ordinary soil analyses in Croatia (pHKCl, pHH2O, organic matter, ammonium lactate extracted P and K) doesn’ t include enough data for CEC calculation, the additional analyses of exchange acidity and clay content were conducted. Also, for the purpose of testing models accuracy, the CEC was measured by ammon-acetate extraction. The CEC, clay and humus contents correlated significantly, but their coefficients differed in tested models. Consequently, themodels accuracy differed too. Higher deviations from masured CEC values were generated by rather general models (clay and humus content as input variables) comparing to models with additional soil fertility indicators involved (exchange acidity) including regression model developed from soil data used in the same testing procedure. All the model were validated with the same analytical procedure using soil samples before and a few vegetations after fertilization and/or liming field experiments. The models could be a useful tool not just for CEC calculating, but also for calculating the percent base saturation too.
