Distribution of mercury, lead and cadmium in Zagreb City Soils
The growing demands on mineral and energy resources, water, soil, pollution, waste disposal together with the rise of megacitities, vulnerable to athropogenic hazards requies a better understanding of the geochemical processes induced by a new geological factor- man.The maps were constructed by the unbalanced hierarchical sampling design based five-level analysis of variance. The total variance distinguishes influences of the regions (surrounding and urban, grids (2x2 km, and 1x1 km), detailed grids and analytical acuracy. The area of 748 km2 was covered with 350 grid sites and 70 aditional samples to accomodate the chosen sampling design. the result of the investigation were the first geochemical maps of mercury, lead, and cadmium for the Zagreb city region with general localization of polluted areas and an aproximate determination of the major pollution mechanism and sources.
