Cultural heritage use compatibility with sustainable development of the urban region: Dubrovnik, Croatia

INTRODUCTION 1. Research of Dubrovnik was prompted by regional development problems and cultural heritage preservation. 2. Preservation of the region’ s cultural heritage will be ensured by development planning compatible with sustainability principles. 3. One of the sustainability principles significant for creative management of cultural heritage is the establishment of the direction of common development for the entire region. 4. In the Dubrovnik urban region, compatibility between cultural heritage use and principles of sustainable development has not yet been valorized. GOAL The research goal is to assess the Dubrovnik urban region in terms of sustainable development and determine compatibility between cultural heritage use and the creation of the direction of common development for the entire region. METHODS 1. Development of the region’ s structural-functional model to show its structural and functional characteristics. Urban region is shown through a model. The structural organization of the region consists of general and specific structural components while the functional organization consists of functional components. Functional components show individual functions, groups of functions, linear groups and functional spatial units. 2. Assessment of compatibility of the researched region’ s organization with an ideally organized region, i.e. region organized in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Deviations of the researched region’ s characteristics from the ideal model are assessed. A-KOOR – absolute coefficient of sustainable development characteristics is calculated. 3. Assessment of compatibility of the researched region with comparable regions from the surrounding area. Deviations of the researched model’ s characteristics from the real model of the region are assessed. R-KOOR – relative coefficient of sustainable development characteristics is calculated. RESULTS The research results show cultural heritage characteristics and the assessment of the structural and functional organization of the Dubrovnik urban region (Croatia) against comparable regions: Ibiza (Spain), Cannes (France), San Remo (Italy) and Rhodes (Greece). CONCLUSION Use of the Dubrovnik urban region cultural heritage, unlike the four Mediterranean regions, is not fully compatible with the direction of the common development of the region. As such, it reduces the possibility for creative management of cultural heritage.
