Calculation of detonation heat by EXPLO5 computer code
The heats of detonation for several high explosives were calculated using own chemical-equilibrium computer code named EXPLO5. The obtained values of detonation heat were compared with the ones calorimetrically determined, and with the cylinder test derived detonation energies as well. The calculation was performed using two sets of values for the enthalpy of carbon formation: (a) zero value which is normally used, and (b) Ornellas' reported positive enthalpy of formation for carbon of 36.63 kJ/mol, which tries to account for the highly disordered form that carbon exhibits in the detonation front. It was found out that, if zero value for enthalpy of formation of carbon is used, a considerable difference exists between the results obtained by EXPLO5 and calorimetrically determined heat of detonation, for explosives which produce a great amount of solid carbon in detonation products. This difference is in proportion with the amount of solid carbon in detonation products. However, when Ornellas' value of formation enthalpy is used, an acceptable agreement was found to exist between the detonation heats values obtained by EXPLO5 and those obtained by calorimetric measurements. Also, satisfactory agreement exists between the cylinder test derived detonation energies and the calculated heats of detonation.
