Geochemical alteration of gastropod shells from cretaceous carbonates impacted by lateritization - Gornje Orešje, Croatia
Leaching of the laterite mud increased concentrationof nickel, cobalt, copper, chromium, manganese, vanadium, magnesium, silicium and iron. Depending on the environment, during the early diagenetic sediment and fossil history these elements changed mineral composition of fossil shells. Magnesiumand iron is found as magnesite and siderite mineralizations of fossils, silicium is preserved as opal impregnations or complete silicifications of fossils, iron and nickel were precipitated as pyrite and millerite in the presence of organic matter. In this work we focusing on early diagenetic mineralizations of fossil organisms.
