Growing crops on petroleum hydrocarbons contaminated soils

All phases of oil exploitation, from the start oil-drilling works to construction of the transport system (underground pipeline network) are accompanied by interventions and procedures which have hazardous effect on the environment. Unfortunately, the possibility of different incidents is not fully excluded, although the state-of-art technical solutions and modern materials used by oil industry in all exploitation phases warrant a high level of safety, . Incidents endanger natural resources, primarily soil and water. Depending on their severity for a certain length of time they can jeopardize, the intended use of the land where incident occurred. That is a rule out of its possible use for plant or livestock production. In the last decade, Faculty of Agriculture participated in the preparation of a number of studies dealing with the evaluation of the extent of soil contamination on which oil incident occurred, and drew up studies and plans for remediation of such soils. The paper presents the results of four-year-long research on growing winter wheat, winter barley and soybean (yield, plant density) in pots under different degrees of soil contamination by crude oil and drilling muds. Research involved monitoring of changes in the soil chemical complex: pH, organic matter, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - PAHs, petroleum hydrocarbons and mineral oils. Presented results of four year investigation show that oil changes in soil and cultivated crops occur as result of application of drilling muds and crude oil. With the decrease of certain parameters in the selected years those changes are the most obvious in the first year of research.
