The distribution of IAA and IBA in Arabidopsis thaliana is diferentially affected in roots and shoots by structurally related flavonoids
The structural features of flavonoids which are involved in the inhibition of auxin transport in Arabidopsis thaliana were evaluated. Among flavonoids those naturally occurring in the model plant A. thaliana, but also some not natural to this plant species were investigated. An auxin-inducible promoter fused to a reporter gene (GUS) was used to monitor distribution of auxins after treatment with flavonoids. Several parameters were investigated: 1. different plant tissues (roots and leaves), 2. different auxins (IAA and IBA) and 3. structurally different flavonoids. It was shown that there are several structural requirements for the flavonoids tested which result in the inhibition of auxin distribution. Different efects of the same flavonoids on IAA and IBA distribution in leaves and roots were established. However, not only the distribution of auxins in the plant was altered, but based on our data we have to assume that also their uptake was influenced. In addition, we showed that various flavonoids induced different gravitropic responses of roots. Taken together we established that different features on the flavonoid molecule result in a complex pattern of their biological activity.
