Tram wheel vibrations due to rail weld irregularity
The wheels of rail vehicles play an important role in driving the tram on track. Different irregularities on the rail running surface (corrugations, rail weld geometry) and on the wheels (wheel flats, non-round wheel form) were the main causes for an increase of vehicle vibrations especially wheel vibrations. During measurements of low floor tram TMK 2200 wheel vibrations in the Zagreb tram network, vibration shocks were recorded every 15 m (the interval of rail welds). This fact was the main reason for investigation of the impact of the rail weld irregularity on tram wheel vibrations. Measurements were performed on tram tracks on routes where vertical geometry of rail running surface in weld zones were previously recorded. Measurements were performed on a straight segment of track (300 m), with constant tram speed of 40 km/h and with a new tram that has been in operation only 1700 km. The results can use for recommend the permissible tolerance of rail surface geometry in weld zones in order to reduce the wheel vibrations and dynamic impact of the vehicle on the track and to increase passenger comfort.
