Development of concrete as a contribution to sustainability
Concrete is the second most used material in the world, after water. Yearly around 750 millions m3 of concrete is being produced in Europe, which is equivalent to consumption of around 4 tonnes of concrete per EU citizen. Concrete technology today, is largest consumer of natural resources and one of the largest waste producers. That is why there is a need of upgrading concrete technology and creating one that is environmentally friendly and sustainable. In this paper main postulates of sustainability in concrete technology are represented with 6 R’ s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, Replace and Rethink. All these steps in assuring sustainable development of concrete technology are described in detail.
