Lead interference in zinc metabolism and the lead and zinc interaction in humans as a possible explanation of apparent individual susceptibility to lead
Serum zinc (ZnS), seminal fluid zinc (ZnF), blood lead (PbB), and activity of erythrocyte delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) were measured in 152 adult male subjects, not occupationally exposed to zinc: 101 lead workers with long-term slight to moderate occupational lead exposure and 51 control subjects with no occupational lead exposure. Significant correlations were found between a decrease of ZnS with respect to an increase of PbB (r=-0.135, P<0.05) and a decrease of ALAD (r=0.237, P<0.002), between a decrease of ZnF with respect to PbB (r=-0.245, P<0.001) and ALAD (r=0.262, P<0.001), and between ZnS and ZnF (r=0.255, P<0.001). The results indicate possible lead interference in zinc metabolism resulting in relative zinc deficiency, and thus lead-zinc interaction which can influence ALAD as well as some other lead-related effects. This might explain a large part of the interindividual differences in response to the same PbB level, i.e. apparent individual susceptibility to lead, which was ascribed to genetic factors.
