Knowledge society and decision-making in organizations - a formal approach framework

Commonplace decision-making of individuals in organizations, takes place in the context of their preferences and the expected utilities maximization, personal as well as organizational. At least two sources of value hierarchies are important. The first one is organizational culture. The second set of values influencing individuals reflects the impact of the broader social community. Values that lead an individual enable her or him to rank and choose among the available alternatives (outcomes) during decision-making. Knowledge society, as a paradigm that governs national economy and society, establishes a particular set of values where knowledge is treated as capital, as an asset, and as a vital value. In this paper the mechanism of the knowledge society ideas and goals realization is explained by means of a conceptual formal model of individual decision-making. We introduce an integral model, and sketch the simulation of two scenarios: a situation where the environment lacks knowledge society attributes and an opposite, where the environment acts as a knowledge society. The model contains two components: the multi-attribute evaluation component and the strategic interactive decision-making component, which is described by game theory tools. Decision makers’ learning through time, and the influence of learning on decisions, is considered as well. Aggregated effects of the model’ s cyclic functioning lead toward the accumulation of decision outcomes of a certain category. The predominating category of decisions indicates the actual impact of values hierarchies in organization and society.
