Chemical characterization and physical nature of sea surface microlayers

The sea surface microlayer represents a distinctive and complex marine environment where unique processes such as wind stress, water transpiration, solar energy flux and atmospheric inputs take place. It is derived from multiple sources and is composed of different natural and anthropogenic organic substances due to their surfactant nature, hydrophobic properties and association with floatable particles, vertical diffusion mechanisms or bubble scavenging. It is now widely recognized that it plays a major role in the exchange processes of gases, material and energy. Thus, the sea microlayer has an important role in the global climate and the overall balance of the Earth. We report here on complex methodological study (monolayer techniques, electrochemical methods, Brewster angle microscopy, fractal analysis) of natural microlayer samples and reconstructed films from different extracts, taking into consideration structure, physical nature and chemical reactivity of microlayers which are relevant for global change
