Coding of Audio-Visual Objects
The development of new MPEG-4 standard reflects new trends on the standardisation of multimedia information resulting from the merging of three worlds: telecommunications, TV/film, and computers. The MPEG-4 standard will give users the possibility to achieve various forms of interactivity with the audio-visual content of scene and mix synthetic and natural audio and video information. The MPEG-4 targets the very low bit rate applications, having sampling dimensions up to 176´144´10 Hz and coded bit rates between 4.8 and 64 kb/s. The standard will provide high degree of flexibility and extensibility in order to take advantage of rapidly evolving technologies. These flexibility and extensibility shall be provided by a MPEG-4 syntactic description language, called MSDL. The syntax will allow the incorporation of new coding techniques, tools and functionalities, providing the standard with ability to adapt and evolve continuously. This paper presents the current state of research in the area of coding of audio-visual objects which is base for MPEG-4 compression algorithm.
