Past, present and future of ultrasound in gastroenterology
With more than 4 decades of experience in transabdominal ultrasonography, and more then 18 000 publications, it has become important diagnostic tool for radiologist, gastroenterologist, surgeon, internist, and family practice physician. Since its development in the 1980s, over 2000 publications have shown endoscopic ultrasonograpy to be safe and accurate method of diagnosing, staging and samplimg a variety of benign and malign lesion.The aim of this review article is present importance of ultrasonography in diagnostics and therapy of gastrointestinal diseases, through brief report of well knowen transcutaneous and more extensive review of endoscopic US, since it represents a novel procedure in development. With further improvements in tehnique and tehnology, the potential applications of ultrasonography seem to be linitless.
