The Importance of Family and Learning in the Contemporary Media Environment
The contemporary society is characterized by sophisticated information technology and communication. Communication through media, especially the electronic media, has become the main link in a world of fast innovation changes. The contemporary media has gained a manifold role: to inform the young audience, to educate them about the meaning and importance of facts, and create new values. Media are also a part of contemporary family environment and therefore have a certain impact on the family and its members. In some families the immediate and emotional contact is very rare and has been replaced by the so called virtual relation (sms, mms, e-mail, etc.), whilst the feeling of warmth, understanding and interpersonal support has become marginal. When discussing the media impact on young audience, the parental role is necessarily questioned. We can say that parents are an unavoidable media socializer and one of the crucial factors which enable the young audience to distinguish fiction from reality, choose media contents selectively, question and decode the media content. Therefore, the parents and the family members must be involved in making choices about the consumption of media and their positive and negative impacts. The contemporary media are today inseparable from upbringing and education, and have an important role in the presentation and exchange of information on local and global levels. Nevertheless, only those young people who critically approach information will be able to experience intrapersonal metamorphosis which connects members of different cultures and participates in fostering of desirable values and orientations. Aiming at flexible forms of learning and learning how to learn will enable a humane enrichment through diversity. Our study includes theoretical insights on the specified theme, but also a short empirical research conducted on a sample of high school students. The methods of gaining information on the lifestyles of children and young people in different countries and cultures, and their impact on the young audience were examined. In addition, the opinion of the young audience on the differences and similarities between various cultures was questioned. The level of credence in information according to the various sources, the level of frequency of instructions to check out the information and the parents` involvement in the mentioned issues were specified.
