Analysis of mutual influences of water quality and hydrological conditios at small sinking stream Trbuhovica

A stream Trbuhovica is located at the topping karst of Gorski kotar in Croatia, next to the border with neighboring Slovenia where it sinks underground. Trbuhovica basin is hydrographicly connected with the springs in Loško polje. The direct surface catchment area amounts only a few km2, and village Prezid (900 inhabitants) is situated within it. The village does not have resolved a sewing system so most of wastewater ends in the watercourse of Trbuhovica. Majority of the creek's inflow consists of the springs Trbuhovica and Obrh. There is also the spring of Mlaka, nearby, whose waters form individual surface stream. Towards improving management of water resources at analyzed transboundary area, the project is being approved of EU commission which has a purpose to analyze water resources of that area and their appropriate protection. In the paper, the 1st phase results of the project are shown – results of monitoring of the hydrologic conditions and water quality. Besides climatologic (precipitation, air temperature, snow cover) and basic hydrologic characteristics (flow and water temperature), periodically, in certain hydrologic conditions water quality parameters (pH, electric conductivity, alkalinity, oxygen regime, nutrients, mineral oils) and microbiology (indicators of fecal pollution) are monitored. Samples of microinvertebrates (animals which habit on/and in the sediment) and samples of periphyton (algae) were collected in the field. Biological results are elaborated via saprobic index according to Pantle-Buck. Results of all conducted analyses showed strong connection of hydrologic condition and selected water quality parameters. The groundwater quality changes are very disposed, and the maximum pollutions occur in the period of intensive rain. The pollution of surface water intensively depends of water flow. Appearance of the first water wave is the most critical period for the pollution of springs in the area of Loška dolina. The accumulated pollution in watercourse basin, quickly rinses and concentrated penetrates underground via swallows. The results of conducted biological research show that the water at the spring of Mlaka is very clean and is classified into the first to second water category, while the point station on Trbuhovica show higher organic pollution. In this work is also analyzed the concept of support to EU projects with such a purposed researches which were conducted within INTERREG III A project KEEP WATERS CLEAN suggested by local community – the town of Čabar in Croatia and district of Loška dolina in Slovenia (2004. – 2006.).
