Teaching mathematics in accordance with learning outcomes using virtual learning environment

In this presentation we will describe student-centered learning of mathematics, construction of learning outcomes for mathematics in various taxonomies as well as their realization in virtual learning environment (VLE). Further, relating of teaching and learning mathematics and strategy of e-learning at the institutional level will be described. In process of construction of learning outcomes of the course Mathematics for ICT we have started from the learning outcomes of the whole study program and extract those where the course can contribute in building defined ICT competences. We defined content of the course (width) and then the depth of the mathematical knowledge and skills using the Cox and Bloom taxonomy, which is also very appropriate for web based evaluation. The best practice examples of mathematical courses at the Faculty of organization and informatics, University of Zagreb will be demonstrated. The course is taught as a blended (hybrid) course and it means that it is combining face to face teaching with on VLE. Besides lectures and seminars in mathematics, students participate in peer group tutorials and use open source VLE Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment). Finally results of evaluation and research on different aspects of technology enhanced learning and student assessment will be analyzed.
