Nuclear Magnetic Spin Noise Spectra

Observing nuclear magnetic spin noise is straightforward with modern high-resolution spectrometers, in particular when equipped with cryogenically cooled probes. Recent experiments on solutions and solids show that high-resolution NMR spectra can be obtained, but quantification of the spin noise response depends heavily on the relative rates of transverse relaxation and radiation damping. An optimized sampling strategy has been developed. The dependence of spin noise on the tuning of the resonance circuit in our experiments deviates significantly from what is predicted by the formulae given by Ernst and McCoy [Chem. Phys. Lett. 139, 587 (1989)]. This tuning behavior, which – at this time – is only partially understood, can be used to characterize the resonance circuits in NMR probes.
